FLIPKART AUTOMATED GUIDED VEHICLES AT SORTATION CENTRE

AI and robots are the inevitable future. They will play a role in everyone’s future jobs, whether that means they make it easier or replace it.

In a 1st in India, Flipkart employs Robots to sort packages in its warehouses

In what could be called a milestone in automation, E-commerce giant Flipkart has introduced 1st robot-based sortation technology in India.

It has deployed more than 100 Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) in its Bengaluru-based Soukya sortation center.

What are they?

AGVs are basically computer-controlled robots which are typically used in warehouses.

They are driverless, box-shaped, wheel-based load carriers who can carry small packages from one location to another.Your package is scanned, loaded onto a conveyer belt and reaches a picker who places it onto the bot.loaded with sensors, the bot passes under a barcode scanner, the algorithm identifies the address guides the bot to the designated slot. The package is dropped, bagged and sent on its way.

AGVs are modular, quick to deploy, self chargeable and runs 7-8 hr on a single charge

Internal training has been provided to the workers to operate the AGVs.

Among e-commerce companies, Amazon was the first to use AGVs in its US warehouses.

On another level

As per Flipkart, these AGVs can sort 4,500 parcels every hour, compared to just 450 by humans in the same duration.

With some adjustments, the number can be increased by up to five times.

No Job Losses, the bots work seamlessly with humans, ensuring speed, accuracy and security without overburdening the facility staff.

Using AGVs will enhance the output of the existing facility without any need to invest in space.

More importantly, none of the about 1000 workers employed at the facility will be laid off, but will be redirected into other areas of the supply chain network.

Betting Big on it

Flipkart has plans to build a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Robotics & Automation to encourage R&D.
Commenting on the launch of the AGVs, Krishna Raghavan Senior Vice President of eKart Tech at Flipkart said,With the Automated Guided Vehicles, we are re-imagining new growth paths while orchestrating new and innovative ways of working. We believe this will help bring efficiencies, agility, and scale to the supply chain operations, helping us serve the customer better.”
For this, the company will partner with start-ups and universities.
According to them, deploying 100 of these AGVs will increase the efficiency of the facility by 60 percent. This will also ensure 5x scaling of the existing 4,500 shipments that the setup does currently.
