What is eSign and how does it work?
eSign: More Enforceable than Wet Signatures
Has anyone ever emailed you a document to sign? An e-sign (Electronic Signature) means you can sign your document without printing, scanning or faxing.
Just open your document and drop your signature anywhere. Then, you can send it back via email to the concerned person. It is easier and faster than signing with a pen. This can be done by using various apps such as KeepSolid Sign.
In India, Aadhaar eSign is a government prescribed method of digitally signing a document and has legal value equivalent to that of wet (hand-written) signatures.
How does e-sign work?
The architect of the process is derived from Application Service Provider (ASP) which choses to provide this service to its users.
When a user accesses the eSignature service, the ASP creates the application interface (API)– which acts as an application form. This API is used to access a partner eSign Service Provider (ESP).
When this connection is established, the user provides an authentication of his identity based on the information saved under his profile (through biometric).
As soon as this information matches the saved information in the database, a temporary Digital Signature Certificate is issued. The ASP finally receives the eSignature from the ESP, which can then be attached to the document.
Salient Features of eSign
- e-sign facilitates *legally valid* signatures.
- e-sign provides an easy and convenient way to digitally sign information anywhere, anytime.
- e-sign ensures the privacy of the signer by requiring that only the thumbprint of the document rather than the whole document be submitted for signature process.
- e-sign provides digital encryption, which means better security of the papers. The software used to create electronic signatures can automatically detect even minor altering in documents.
